Americans for UNESCO (AU) furthers the vision of UNESCO's founders for a global society of peace and comity, helping intellectual communities and civil society in the United States participate in UNESCO activities around the world. AU supports the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO by serving as a ready resource on issues confronting UNESCO, its Member States, its governing bodies, and its programs. The members of AU Board of Directors and Advisory Council constitute a distinguished preserve of experience, memory and knowledge, ever available at home and abroad to learned and professional communities seeking to participate in UNESCO programs.
Encouraging qualified candidates to serve at UNESCO and enriching the U.S. association with UNESCOare among AU's priority tasks. Critical to building an archive of relevant documents and expertise is the AU publication Prospects & Retrospects, an authoritative compendium of expert commentary, reflection and analysis of issues. Additionally, AU may help locate expert participants for fora and workshops, provide pointed summaries of key issues, and organize events to explore UNESCO-related issues.
As a member of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO, AU is in the unique position of providing counsel and advice to the Commission's substantive committees on education, science and engineering, social and human sciences, culture, and communications. Expert analysis of UNESCO's governance documents and systems is made available to Commission members and staff, as needed, to facilitate the Commission's work in advance of UNESCO Executive Board meetings, its General Conference and other gatherings of committees, working groups, task forces, and commissions. |
